Shaggin’ Down South–Save the Last Dance for Me

Shaggin’ Down South

Since we’ve had some interesting discussions on this blog regarding  where the Shag originated, I thought I’d pass on some info on a new book titled, Save the Last Dance for Me by Phil Sawyer and Tom Poland (University of  South Carolina Press, $21.95).

The book is subtitled “A Love Story of the Shag and the  Society of Stranders.” It focuses on the Grand Strand, but also notes the early Carolina Beach music scene. Sawyer is president of the Society of Stranders, the shag-dancing preservation society.

If you’re interested in discovering more facts on this iconic dance of the Carolinas  check out this book!
